Our voice is the future.
“Legacy is not leaving something for people, it’s leaving something in people. Our brother Ermias Asghedom (aka Nipsey Hussle) has left a burning fire in our hurts. His legacy will never fade, the marathon will continue!“
Thank you to everyone that came out last night to honor him! #TMC

"Whenever Eritreans retreat, there is strategy involved..."
This past weekend, YPFDJ Oakland conducted a retreat for incoming and existing members. As part of our incoming membership cycle, each potential new member is required take part in an intensive political education program that incorporates Eritrean history, ideology, and organizational practice. At the same time, existing members conducted preliminary programatic and administrative evaluations after taking part in a member development session. We are very excited and optimistic for what these youth have to offer the young Eritrean community in Oakland and Eritrea!
YPFDJ Oakland
Members of YPFDJ Oakland and young members of the Eritrean community in the Bay Area partnered with a regular initiative by Lighthouse Oakland to hand out hot meals, snacks, water, and blankets to residents of tent encampments in Oakland. Together with other community volunteers, we prepared meals and drove to three different encampments in Oakland to assist the homeless on New Years Eve. This experience was incredibly enlightening to our volunteers as they were able to witness first-hand some of the human costs of hyper-gentrification and displacement as a result of the housing crisis in the Bay Area. Please let us know if you would like to get involved!
Every year, YPFDJ Oakland throws a dinner in appreciation of the community that has facilitated our development and inspired us to work for the Eritrean community. The food offered is a reflection of our heritage and our traditions adapted from our experience as Eritrean-Americans. This years' dinner featured various Eritrean stews, a Turkey (with fixins' of course), healthy garden salad, a corn bar, and Himbasha Cupcakes! For entertainment, we hosted bingo and played Eritrean music to get that party jumpin'!
